MYSTERY ANSWER FOR SEPTEMBER
This one was a tough one, as I only got one correct guess.  The old North Beach was built by the Union Pacific Railroad to compete with Astoria-Megler Ferry Company.  It didn't work, and the ferry was scrapped in the 1940's.

Summer Sun on the Bremerton Run
The Kaleetan, once a staple on the San Juan Island run has settled into a routine on the Seattle-Bremerton run the last several years, where her added passenger capacity is particularly welcome on the commuter runs.

WESTERN STATE HOSPITAL, STEILACOOM,  WASHINGTON
From Wikipedia...
Western State Hospital is a psychiatric hospital located at 9601 Steilacoom Boulevard SW in Lakewood, Washington, which is a suburb of Tacoma. Administered by the Washington Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), it is the largest mental facility west of the Mississippi River, with 806 beds, and the second oldest state-owned enterprise, after the University of Washington.

One of two state-owned adult psychiatric hospitals, the other being Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake, the hospital currently treats patients using psychiatric medications, mental health counseling, group therapy, drug and alcohol education, psychiatric rehabilitation and behavior modification therapies. It provides evaluation and inpatient treatment for individuals with serious or long-term mental illness that have been referred to the hospital through the Regional Support Network system and serves the needs of Western Washington for people who have been committed as a result of criminal proceedings.

History

The facility was established in Washington Territory as Fort Steilacoom Asylum in 1871, predating statehood by almost 20 years, in former buildings of Fort Steilacoom, which was a U.S. Army post from 1849 to 1868. In 1875, the territorial government took control due to complaints about patient neglect, brutal abuse and poor living conditions.

The original buildings of the asylum were demolished in 1886 to make way for a larger structure. It was renamed Western Washington Hospital for the Insane and the main ward was completed in 1887. In each of the following decades numerous out-buildings were constructed. In 1915, it was renamed Western State Hospital and grew in various stages.

Day One and already the Storm Route taken...
The first day of fall scheudle was windy enough to send the Elwha scurrying around the storm route to Sidney.  Well-known to be top-heavy due to the various changes to her over the years, the Elwha is far more susceptible to heavy seas than the Chelan. Photo by and courtesy of Brandon Swan.
Shrink wrap me like a Mars Bar...

The latest plan to preserve the Kalakala according to the website is to "paint the vessel inside and out" and then "wrap it in shrink wrap" to preservere it.  All this is supposed to be done by mid-October.  How they plan to pain the sides of the vessel without drydocking the ferry is not explained, as state law prohibits such an undertaking outside of a drydock.
