MYSTERY FERRY ANSWER FOR JULY
The
Chinook!  The former WSF passenger only ferries is currently undergoing renovation at Nicholas Brothers on Whidbey Island.  When finished, she'll be renamed and will head down to San Francisco.
The thing that was off about the
Elwha photo--she was in San Francisco Bay, taking refuge from bad weather.
Congrats to everyone who got it right! And that was everyone who mailed in!
SEA TRIALS UNDERWAY...
The new Chetzemoka is nearly complete!   She is currently undergoing sea trials by  Todd and is expected to be handed over to WSF this month  for further trials and crew familarization. She should be in regular service on the  Port Townsend -Keystone run on 30 August. Photo courtesy of  WSF.
The Ferry Photo of the Month...

is courtesy of Paul Kemna.  Ferries look particularly beautiful at night, especially set against the backdrop of the Seattle skyline.  The art deco lines of Washington Mutual Tower (or perhaps it is Chase Tower now) has the greenish roof on the left.
CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT, IT'S STILL KEYSTONE TO ME...
In an effort to allegedly drum up business and make things "clearer" the Port Townsend-Keystone route has been renamed the Port Townsend-Coupville route.  Never mind that it has been PT-Keystone for nearly or century, or the the ferrydock is nowhere near the town of Coupeville.  This alleged effort at "reducing confusion" will do exactly the opposite.  Photo courtesy of Emory Lindgard.
The Google Earth place for the month is the house from Whatever Happened to Baby Jane...

Henry Farrell published a gothic thriller about two aging actresses in Hollywood--one a former child star, the other a successful actress from the 1930's whose career was cut short by a tragic car accident at the hands of the jealous sister.
Robert Aldrich directed the film adaptation (1962) which starred Hollywood legends Joan Crawford and Bette Davis--both of whom were considered pretty much washed up at that point.  The film proved to be a tremendous hit and revitalized the career of both stars--though it pigeon-holed them into doing bad horror films for many years.  Both sadly ended their careers with dogs of films--Crawford in a bad (but watchable) Sci-fi horror flick called
Trog and Davis in an unwatchable piece of tripe called Wicked Stepmother. (If you want to see better films by either, check out Crawford in A Woman's FaceSadie McKee or Possessed.  Davis in All About Eve, Now Voyager or The Little Foxes.)

The house still stands today at 172 South McFadden Place in Hollywood.  For years it looked exactly as it had in the film, but in recent years the front door door has undergone modifcations and the awnings over the windows are now gone, as well as the distinctive lamp posts.  It seems that the current owners want to distance themselves from the film that made it so recognizable.
